Ecuador is the smallest of South America’s Andean republics and without doubt the easiest to explore.
The capital city Quito, is the perfect base for travelers and for most, their point of arrival. Located only 40km South of the Equator Quito’ Andean setting ensures that it has a pleasant spring like climate all year round.
Unlike other Latin American capitals, Quito has not been swamped by a population explosion; its elegant colonial heart is preserved in the 18th century, while the modern “new town” offers every comfort from the 20th century. The Andean highlands remain Ecuador’s heartland. The classic excursion from Quito, and one of the country’s most famous attractions, is a short trip North for the Saturday market in Otavalo. Then, stretching South of Quito is the lush mountain valley that the German scientist Alexander von Humbolt dubbed “the Avenue of the Volcanoes.”
