CASA MOJANDA
In 1993, Betti & Diego, consulting with their architect, Manual Perez of Quito, began the landscape and structural design of Casa Mojanda. The finest local examples of traditional design were adapted and integrated into the final plan while countless practical details were left to the intuitive skill of local craftsmen. Construction began in May '93, the essential structures were finished in November '96, and the painstaking process of creating this superlative mountain side inn was complete when they opened in April 1996.
All of the buildings on the grounds of Casa Mojanda utilize traditional methods of construction. Structural walls of rammed earth provide cooling during the day and retain and slowly release their solar gain throughout the evening. Enormous hand molded terra cotta bricks link structural details while complementing the brilliant adobe walls. Hand formed roof tiles, of native red clay, and red tile floors provide the perfect counterpoint to the massive white walls.
Within each structure, open eucalyptus roof beams contribute textural warmth and a sense of quiet structural strength. White ceramic tile is selectively used to visual and practical advantage throughout the enormous country style kitchen and within each cottage bath. Diego and Betti designed the many tables and chairs of Ecuadorian cedar which were made in the shops of local craftsmen and provide a wonderful complement to the structural materials. Selective use of native wooden flooring, antique furnishings, hand carved Ecuadorian masks, and an outstanding collection of lithographs & drawings reinforce the quiet architectural strength of Casa Mojanda.

Our 34 rooms of hacienda near Latacunga, Cotopaxi, offer our guests guaranteed quality and comfort.
The terrain on which the hacienda is located was bought by landowner Don Matheo de la Escalera y Velasco in 1695.
The hacienda has played host to a number of important historical, social, political and scientific events on a national and international level. The wise French intellectual Carlos Maria de la Condamine arrived in Quito with Luis Godin y Pedro Bouger in 1736. Six years later, after two hundred years of inactivity, Volcano Cotopaxi erupted, provoking the scientists to move closer to the outskirts of the volcano. Carlos Maria took up residence in La Cienega, resulting in the beginning of a long and meaningful friendship between the academic and Marquez de Maenza.
The hacienda’s first guest was Sir Alexander von Humboldt, who stayed there whilst carrying out a series of investigations in 1802.
Mariscal de Ayucucho, Antonio Jose de Sucre and several presidents of the republican period such as the first president of Ecuador, Juan Jose Flores, signed the important Treaty of La Cienega here in the hacienda. Gabriel Garcia Moreno, Leonidas Plaza Gutierrez and Jose Velasco Ibarra are historical figures of the country who have resided at the hacienda.
In memory of those important figures, we, the present-day owners, welcome you to La Cienega and promise you an unforgettable experience here in our hotel hacienda surrounded by natural beautiful scenery in the heart of the Andes.

SAN AUGUSTIN
One and a quarter hours from Quito, capital of Ecuador, stands the beautiful and little known colonial Hacienda of San Agustín de Callo. Built on the site of an Inca palace, one of the two most important archaeological Inca sites in Ecuador, and the point furthest north from Cuzco of Imperial style construction, this working farm offers an unrivalled glimpse into Ecuador's rich and colourful past. Since the 15th century San Agustin de Callo has served as Inca fortress, Augustinian convent and temporary home for the French Geodesic Mission whose scientific results helped to determine the true shape of the planet. Famous visitors include Jorge Juan and Antonio de Ulloa who were appointed by the King of Spain to host the Geodesic Mission in 1736, the awesome scientific enterprise organized and led by Charles-Marie de la Condamine; Alexander von Humboldt German scientist and renowned naturalist and explorer and the illustrious English mountain climber Edward Whymper.
In 1921 the Hacienda was purchased by General Leonidas Plaza Gutierrez, leader of the liberal Revolution. Plaza went on to become President of Ecuador in 1901 and again in 1912, a position which was to be held by his son Galo Plaza in 1948. The Hacienda has remained in the family to this day and is currently owned by the General's granddaughter, Mignon Plaza, whose father, the distinguished congressman and legendary amateur bullfighter, Jose María Plaza, played a pivotal role in politics throughout his life.
This temple or palace was built around 1440 A.D. by one of the last Inca emperors, Huayna-Cápac, and to this day the remaining rooms prevail as a magnificent sample of the unique style of Inca construction. The site is currently being investigated by Dr. David Brown of the University of Texas, the funding of which was provided by the National Geographic Society. Previously unknown portions of Inca walls and foundations have been discovered throughout the restoration process of the house.
